SHARPENING FAQs

What is sharpening?

Sharpening is the operation of placing a hollow on the bottom of a skate blade creating two edges.

How often should I sharpen my skates?

We recommend sharpening your blades after 2-3 hours on the ice.

How many cycles should I choose when sharpening?

3 cycles is the standard when sharpening your skates. However, you can add or remove cycles based on your sharpening preferences.

HOLLOW AND GRINDING WHEEL FAQs

What is a hollow?

The hollow is the archway in the center of your blade.

What hollow choices do you offer?

PROSHARP BAUER ADVANTEDGE Grinding Wheels come in 10 different hollows, as well as a FLAT grinding wheel. Sizes range from 1/4” or 7mm (deep hollow, most bite) to 1 3/8” or 34mm (shallow hollow, most glide).

What is calibration?

A calibrated skate sharpener ensures even inside and outside edges.

How long does my grinding wheel last?

PROSHARP BAUER ADVANTEDGE Grinding Wheels are designed to sharpen up to 75 pairs of skates —at 3 cycles per blade. Your sharpener will prompt you when your wheel life is low at 10%, and then again at 0% when it’s time to replace your grinding wheel.

How do I know which grinding wheel to choose?

We recommend starting anywhere between 5/8” or 16mm to 3/4” or 19mm. This range features the most popular hollow depths with a good balance of bite and glide.

What is the difference between a grinding wheel and a flat grinding wheel?

Hollow grinding wheels are used to sharpen your skates. A FLAT grinding wheel removes blade trauma in an efficient manner and resets your blade before adding a new hollow.

What is blade trauma?

Blade trauma is imperfections on the edges of your steel.

CYCLE FAQs

What is a cycle?

A cycle is the process of the grinding wheel traveling down the blade and back.

How many cycles should I run when changing hollows?

We recommend running 3–5 cycles when changing a hollow.

How many cycles should I run when using new steel?

We recommend using the FLAT grinding wheel for 3 cycles to flatten out your blade. Then, use you preferred grinding wheel for 10 cycles.

How can I tell that I’ve ran enough cycles?

There will be visible burr on the outside of both edges across the length of the steel.

BLADE MAINTENANCE FAQs

What is burr?

Burr is material from ground steel found on the outside edge of your skate blades. Burr needs to be removed prior to skating. Click here to learn more about honing.

What is a level sharpening?

Level sharpening is an even inside and outside edge on your skate blades.

What is a Blade Angle Tester?

A tool used to ensure level edges on blades.

What is a hone or stone?

A hone or stone is a tool that is used to remove burrs from the edges of your blade.

How do I hone?

Press your hone flush and firm against the blade, angle the hone 3-5 degrees, then run it once or twice down the runner to ensure burr is removed.

Should I be using a different hone for coated steel and non-coated steel?

Yes. For coated steel, we recommend using the porcelain side of the X-5 or X-3 Combi Hone in conjunction with the Gummi Hone. For non-coated steel, you can use the X-5 Combi Hone, X-3 Combi Hone, Gummi Hone, Basic Stone, and Tear Drop Hone.

FAQs

This is hard to notice with a single sharpening but is something to watch over time or when purchasing used skates.

How do you tell if your skates are sharp? ›

If you feel a little bite to your nail as you drag it across the edge – the edge is sharp. How do you break in freshly sharpened skates? ›

The only way to "break in" the sharpening is to skate more and stop more. The sharp blade catches the ice much better than a dull blade, including when you stop, which is why you trip. Try doing all the skills you know on the ice to help dull down the blades a little.

How many hours does it take to break in hockey skates? ›

Pros break in (and down) their skates quickly. They need very stiff skates so that they won't have to break in several pairs during one hockey season. But most players, youth through adult, skate moderately, anywhere from one to three times a week, in sessions lasting from one – two hours.
