Grilled Pork Loin

Whenever you’re looking for that perfect roast for Sunday dinner, look no further than this grilled pork loin. It’s a nice, big cut of meat that will easily feed the entire family (and maybe even have leftovers the next day!). Pork loin is extremely lean and full of flavor, making it an amazing cut of meat to cook on a gas or charcoal grill. If you’re looking for the smoked version of this meat, check out my post for Smoked Pork Loin.

Pork is a great vehicle for whatever flavors you want to add to it, and this pork loin is no exception. The pork is not super fatty, so the seasoning and the char from the grill add a much-needed punch of flavor.

Quick reminder that pork loin and pork tenderloin are not the same thing. This pork loin is a center cut loin chop cut from tissue along the upper side of the rib cage vs. the tenderloin that is cut from the muscle that runs through the central spine of the pig. Pork loin is the cut of meat that can be further broken down into pork chops. So if you’re a pork chop fan, this pork loin recipe is for you!

Grilled Pork Loin Roast

This recipe for grilled pork loin roast is a keeper. Not only does this recipe use my Award Winning Chicken Seasoning, but the added flavor from the grill can be considered an added flavor by itself. The chicken seasoning is an amazing blend of garlic, onion, rosemary, and thyme to give the pork a very traditional roast flavor.

My Chicken Seasoning is available for purchase from Patio Provisions, but if you don’t have any on hand, you can also make your own Lemon Herb Chicken Seasoning from my recipe on this site. It also combines garlic, onion, and a handful of dried herbs to give your pork lots of good flavor. Don’t be fooled by the name, this chicken seasoning tastes great on pork too!

It won’t take long to prep your roast for grilling. In fact, you only need to dedicate a few minutes to getting it ready to go on the grill. Begin by trimming any excess silverskin on the pork loin. Next, drizzle the outside of the roast with olive oil and season well with the Chicken Seasoning.

How to Grill a Pork Loin

Once prepped and seasoned, this pork loin is a breeze to grill. All you have to do is follow these three steps and you’re well on your way to enjoying a perfect pork loin roast.

  1. Fire up the grill! Preheat your grill to 350 degrees F for two-zone cooking. Two-zone cooking will have one direct heat side of the grill and one indirect heat side of the grill.
  2. Grill the pork loin. Place your trimmed and seasoned roast directly on the grill grates on the indirect heat side of the grill. Close the lid on the grill, and cook for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Remove the pork loin from the grill when it has reached an internal temperature of 145 degrees F. Make sure to insert your thermometer in the thickest part of the pork loin in the center of the meat to get an accurate reading.
  3. Rest before serving. This pork loin will be hot once it comes off the grill. Allow the meat to rest for around 15 minutes before slicing and serving to your family or guests.

How Long to Grill a Pork Loin

It takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to fully grill a 2-3 pound pork loin. For this recipe, the grill is preheated to 350 degrees F. With the grill running consistently at this temperature, the pork loin is cooked over indirect heat until the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees F.

Always remember to cook to temperature and not to time with meat. Keep an instant read meat thermometer handy and take the temperature periodically throughout the cook. Adjust cook time as needed, and keep in mind that smaller or larger roasts will have different cook times as well.

Should I wrap my pork tenderloin in foil when grilling? ›

If you've been looking to elevate your grilling game, you can't go wrong with grilled pork tenderloin in foil. Not only does grilling give this tender cut of meat a tantalizing smoky flavor that everyone will love, but cooking it in foil can take the dish's depth and juiciness to a whole new level.

What's the best way to cook pork on the grill? ›

Grill your pork chops until seared and cooked through. I recommend a cook time of 8 minutes per side, but to guarantee perfection, check the temperature with a meat thermometer—each grill and pork chop is different. Let them rest for around 5 minutes before serving to guarantee they are perfectly tender and juicy.

What is the secret to tender pork loin? ›

Once the pork loin roast reaches 145°F on an instant-read thermometer, remove it from the oven, and let it rest on a cutting board for 20 minutes. This gives the meat time to reabsorb all its juices. You can also brine the pork before you cook it, which ensures the meat stays tender, juicy, and well-seasoned.

Does pork loin get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

Quite the opposite, actually! Pork tenderloin should be cooked quickly and then left to rest to ensure it stays tender. If you cook it too long, it will become tough and chewy.

Should pork tenderloin be at room temperature before grilling? ›

Grill. Let the pork come to room temperature. Preheat the grill to medium. The best temperature to grill pork tenderloin is 350 to 375 degrees F.

Do you grill pork tenderloin fat side up or down? ›

Do You Smoke Pork Loin Fat Side Up Or Down? Smoke pork loin with the fat side up. The fat will render and help keep the meat from drying out.

Should I cover my pork roast with aluminum foil? ›

Tenting can be suitable for some cuts of meat, but if you want a crunchy crust on your roast, then it's best to leave it uncovered. If you notice that the roasted pork is browning too much, you can lightly cover it with aluminum foil. However, do not cover it for the last 5-10 minutes in the oven.

How do you keep pork moist on the grill? ›

You may already be aware that brining pork chops makes them juicier. The brining process allows the meat to retain more moisture during cooking. It's an important step when grilling as pork can dry out easily over the open flames. So I applied this method to my grilled pork chop recipe.

How do you tenderize pork before grilling? ›

Mild tenderizing is accomplished through the use of acidic ingredients. Lemon juice, flavored vinegar, red wine, and coffee are all recommended as marinade ingredients that can soften the meat a little. For more extensive tenderizing, you'll need either an enzymatic ingredient or a powdered meat tenderizer.

How do you grill pork without drying it out? ›

How can I grill pork chops so they don't stick and are thoroughly cooked through, but not dry? Pork chops by nature are relatively low in fat (some heritage breeds excepted). So the best way to keep them moist is to brine them (dry or wet) beforehand and grill them to just cooked through (around 140-145F).

How to stop pork loin drying out? ›

Chefs also recommend introducing some fat into the mix, such as bacon or lard, to increase the fat content in the cooking process. You can also try the method many cooks swear by, of patting dry and then salting the meat, keeping it uncovered in the fridge overnight before cooking.

How do you cook pork tenderloin without drying it out? ›

Brush the pork tenderloin with additional marinade, then bake in a preheated oven at 425°F for about 15-20 minutes, until the pork reaches a temperature of 145°F, then remove it from the oven. Cooking the pork tenderloin at the high temperature of 425 degrees F helps it cook quickly and prevents it from drying out.
