History[]
Annabeth Chase is the daughter of the goddess Athena and a mortal man, her father. Children of Athena are born from a thought in her mind and then given to a partner she feels connected to. As a baby, Annabeth was sent by her mother as a gift for her father. For a while, she was treated like a gift. Her father cared for her and loved her. However, he eventually met a woman and they had their own kids. And to the woman, Annabeth wasn't a gift, but a problem. So Annabeth left when she was seven.[1]
One day, Annabeth was hiding in an alley and was found by two half-bloods, Luke and Thalia. When Luke and Thalia found Annabeth, Luke cared for her right away. But Thalia made her earn it.[1] The two were worried about taking her in and expose her to the monsters. However, they saw Annabeth fight and they eventually became a family ever since. When the three first arrived at Camp Half-Blood, they were being chased by Agents of Hades; the Furies. To buy her friends some time, Thalia turned back to fight. Grover, her satyr protector tried to stop her, but she wouldn’t listen. So, at the last moment, Zeus; her father, intervened to save her life and changed her form to a magical tree, which Annabeth describes as a hero's fate.
At some point, Grover also becomes Annabeth's satyr protector. As the strongest warrior in camp, Annabeth thinks the only way left to prove herself was to go on a quest. Chiron's been promising her for years that one day, a demigod would arrive who was fated to go on a quest that even Chiron couldn't prevent. And when that happened, she could join it. Every new arrival, Annabeth watches, looking for a sign they're the one. However, she gives up after a day or two.[2][3]
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (TV series)[]
Season One[]
I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher[]
Annabeth Chase does not appear in this episode until the very last scene. Percy Jackson slowly wakes from being unconscious. Chiron in his true form, and a group of demigods including Annabeth, are surrounding him. At some point, Annabeth says, “he must be the one,” referring to the demigod who was fated to go on a quest even Chiron couldn't prevent.
I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom[]
Annabeth's shadowy silhouette is seen, in the infirmary, by an unconscious Percy Jackson who wakes up from his rest, still healing from his fight with the Minotaur. When questioned by the latter of his whereabouts, her only response was “you drool when you sleep.”
Later in the episode, it was revealed that she had been stalking Percy ever since he arrived during their conversation in the bathroom. This was after Clarisse La Rue and her equally mean-spirited siblings from Cabin #5, attempted to dunk the blond curly-haired demigod's head in toilet water; which caused him to unintentionally attack the bullies out of defense. As Percy examinedー still dumbfounded by what happenedー his surroundings, he notices Annabeth standing in the entry and recognizes her as the same mysterious girl from the night in the infirmary, marking their first official meeting. When asked why she was observing him, Annabeth simply says she has been "waiting for something like this to happen", so she'd know if he could help her team win Capture the Flag.
During the training for Capture the Flag, Annabeth watches over other demigods as they trained, most likely training them. Then she sees Percy Jackson walking with Luke Castellan, and her expression changes slightly, as if she is examining him. During this scene, Luke is also talking about Annabeth to Percy: Luke tells Percy that Annabeth is the head counselor of the Athena cabin, and that she has led their team to three straight wins in the previous Capture the Flag games. Percy then mentions his conversation with her in the bathroom. Luke tells him that Annabeth sees the world differently, and that she is always six steps ahead of everyone else.
Capture the Flag has begun. Annabeth Chase walks over to Luke and checks in to see if it's clear what his job is. Before Luke goes on, she asks him, "Today feel like a winning kinda day to you?"
Luke gives his company the signal to move, but as Percy is about to follow him, Annabeth tells him he is with her. Annabeth and Percy walk together to the position where she wants him. While on their way, Percy tells Annabeth about how he knows that she is better at this than he is (to which she responds with a nod), but that he needs everything to go well as he is planning to win his father's attention today. Annabeth then stops walking as they have reached the destination. She notices Percy's armor strap needed to be adjusted, and fixes it for him. She then says, "You still don't get where you fit into all this, do you?" Before Percy has the chance to respond, the signal that the game has started goes off. Annabeth says, "game on,” and puts on her Yankees Cap and disappears. Percy is confused, and Annabeth takes it off again to tell him that it was a gift from her mother. She also tells him to stop worrying and that he will do great, and then she turns invisible again.
Clarrise chased Percy to the lake, where Percy snapped her spear and defeated her goons. Clarrise grabbed Percy by his armor, but blues rushed out of the forest, holding the red flag. Clarrise shoved Percy and stormed away. Annabeth's voice spoke from nothingness. She then appeared by removing her baseball cap. Annabeth confirmed Percy's suspicions by saying she was there the whole time but didn't help Percy. Annabeth then apologized to Percy and pushed him into the lake. Immediately, Percy's cuts and scrapes began to heal. A glowing trident floated above his head. Percy looked at it, as did everybody else.
We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium[]
Chiron addressed the head counselors on the quest details at the choosing ceremony. He said Percy would have to go to the Underworld in Los Angeles to confront Hades and retrieve the master bolt. Chiron told Percy he could choose two to join him on the quest. Percy immediately chose Annabeth because he thought she would ensure the quest succeeded and Grover because Percy trusted him.

Appearance[]
Annabeth is a 12-year-old African-American girl. She has dark skin and intelligent-looking brown eyes with curly black hair styled in box braids and thick eyebrows usually worn in a serious/determined expression. She has a slim-average figure and is shorter than her friends Percy Jackson and Grover Underwood.
Personality[]
At first glance, Annabeth appears to be cold, calculating, and blunt. As a daughter of Athena, Annabeth is remarkably perceptive and analytical. According to Luke, she is always "six steps ahead" (the number six could be a reference to her cabin number) of her allies and enemies, and would frequently follow new campers around so she can determine if they are the right demigod to follow for a quest. While she normally gives up on following new demigods after a few days, she develops an interest in Percy, correctly assuming he is the son of Poseidon. Because she spent five years at Camp Half-Blood, Annabeth has not experienced things most kids her age do, such as movies and theme parks. This leaves her with little understanding of the modern world. For example, Annabeth has never been to see a movie which is shown through her saying it, and her not understanding Percy’s reference to Wizard of Oz when he says we’re not in Kansas anymore. She’s also never heard of Disney World and she’s never really gotten the opportunity to live like a normal kid. Throughout season one, Annabeth becomes more friendly towards Percy, and starts to connect more with her human side. She learns through Percy that the gods aren’t always what she was raised to believe they are. And by the end of the season, she is returning home to spend more time with her family, especially her father. After all of the years that she has spent at Camp Half Blood, learning how to be the best warrior or a great soldier, she gets to leave camp and learn how to just be a kid.
Abilities and Tools[]
- Annabeth's Yankees Cap: Annabeth owns a Yankees cap gifted by her mother, Athena. It allows her to turn invisible and stealthily follow anyone she pleases.
- Annabeth's Knife: Annabeth carries a Celestial Bronze knife with her on her quest.
Relationships[]
Percy Jackson[]
“ | Ares is that way. Zeus is that way. My mother is that way. He isn't that way! He's better than that. | ” |
–Annabeth to Hephaestus about Percy, A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers |
Percy and Annabeth are friends. When they first met, Annabeth had suspected Percy of being special and watched him. After Clarisse and her siblings were beat by Percy during Capture the Flag, she pushed him into the creek to test her theory. When Percy chose her for the quest, he claimed that it was because she would ensure the quest would succeed no matter what. He later admitted that he chose her to avoid the Oracle's warning about a friend betraying him because he couldn't see them as friends. As the quest went on and they got to know each other better, they started to become friends. Annabeth later hugs him after he is revealed to be alive after escaping the Chimera and Echidna. She refuses to leave Percy behind after he is trapped by Hephaestus's chair, even as the Blacksmith God tells her to leave him. By the time they contact Luke, he described their friendship as "an old married couple."
Grover Underwood[]
“ | He was my protector first! | ” |
–Annabeth Chase to Percy Jackson, We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium |
Annabeth has known Grover since she was very young. Grover was assigned as her, Thalia, and Luke's protector and tasked with bringing them to camp.
Luke Castellan[]
“ | Hers [side] always. She's my little sister. | ” |
–Luke Castellan about Annabeth, I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom |
Annabeth met Luke when she was only seven years old, and the have considered each other family ever since. Thalia, daughter of Zeus, Luke, and Annabeth fought monsters alone for a time before they were assigned protector Grover Underwood. When Thalia didn't make it to camp, Luke and Annabeth were reinforced in their relationships and have been close ever since. No one believes in or understands Annabeth more than Luke, and no one looks up to Luke more than Annabeth. She is greatly hurt by his betrayal.
Thalia Grace[]
When Annabeth first came across Thalia and Luke, Luke cared for her immediately, but Thalia made her earn it. They were on the road for a while, and they then met Grover. Thalia sacrificed herself at the top of what is know as Half-Blood Hill to save Annabeth, Luke, and Grover. Annabeth frequently visits her tree, and she misses Thalia a lot.
Athena[]
Athena is Annabeth's godly mother. Like all demigod children of Athena, Annabeth was conceived in Athena's brain before being delivered to her mortal father's doorstep. Athena also gifted Annabeth an invisibility Yankees cap. Annabeth has great respect for her mother, defending her actions from Percy and Medusa.
Once Annabeth allows Percy to ship Medusa's Head to Mount Olympus, an insulted Athena revokes sanctuary from the Gateway Arch. It is also implied Athena sent Echidna and the Chimera on Annabeth and her friends in retaliation. This and the time she spent with Percy causes Annabeth to realize Athena isn't perfect. During her talk with Hephaestus, Annabeth says that the Olympian's cold ideas of family are wrong and that she won't be like them anymore.
Etymology[]
- Annabeth is an anagram of "Athena" with a few extra letters, N and B, added. Annabeth is a variant of the Hebrew name, Anna, and the name means "God has favored me." The third syllable of her name, Beth, is a common shortened form of another Hebrew name, Elizabeth, which means "my God is an oath" or perhaps "my God is abundance." Beth can also be a nickname for Bethany, a female name first used as the name of a town in the Christian Bible, which is believed to mean "house of figs."
- Chase is a Middle English surname, the occupational name for a hunter. In Middle English, the word "chase" means "hunt."
