What happens if you answer a robocall but don t say anything? ›

If you answer the call, your number is considered 'good' by the scammers, even if you don't necessarily fall for the scam. They will try again because they know someone on the other side is a potential victim of fraud. The less you answer, the fewer robocalls you will receive.

By responding “yes,” people notify robo-callers that their number is an active telephone number that can be sold to other telemarketers for a higher price. This then leads to more unwanted calls.

If you accidentally answer a spam call, do not respond to the call and hang up immediately. You should then individually block that spam number from your phone and report it to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to help stop spam callers from attacking other people.

Apparently it isn't so, and the scam has evolved to make money even when no one answers. The way it works is that “robocallers” will purchase phone numbers and hire call centers to make as many calls as possible on a daily basis.

It's better to ignore spam calls. When you decline a call, it can alert the spammer that your phone number is active, prompting them to call you again. If you use a call-blocking tool that uses caller ID, you should never answer calls labelled as spam.

Pressing “2” may work, but more than likely it does nothing more than end the call; and you'll probably continue receiving calls.

Phone calls are unlikely to be the direct source of phone hacks. But text messages can contain malware, and both calls and texts can be used to launch phishing attacks or other scams to trick you into giving up sensitive information, transferring money, or downloading viruses or spyware.

If you answer the phone and the caller - or a recording - asks you to hit a button to stop getting the calls, you should just hang up. Scammers often use this trick to identify potential targets. Do not respond to any questions, especially those that can be answered with "Yes."

By calling back a spam number, you could be targeted with scam calls and become a victim of AI voice scams. Scammers can record your voice during a scam call and use it to impersonate you in order to obtain money or access private information.

The scammer might record your “Yes” response to voice-authorize charges to an account. Or they might use it as proof of your opt-in for the call in the first place. Or the con might go even further by engaging you to get a voice sample so they can clone your voice.

Call blocking technology sometimes stops calls from scammers who make fake names or numbers show up on your caller ID. It's helpful when your caller ID labels a call as a potential scam. But not all scam calls will get flagged.

The National Do Not Call Registry protects landline and wireless phone numbers. You can register your numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry at no cost by calling 1-888-382- 1222 (voice) or 1-866-290-4236 (TTY). You must call from the phone number you wish to register. You can also register at donotcall.gov.
